In the time it takes a woman to be evaluated by a provider in a typical hospital emergency room, she can be seen, diagnosed, treated and released during a visit to a Women’s Health Emergency Center (WHEC). Established by Southern Arizona Laborists, the WHEC is an innovative, efficient model of care for several reasons:
- Our WHECs are designed with a singular focus on women’s health issues.
- The 24/7 centers are staffed by board-certified OBGYN physicians who know how to identify emergent conditions promptly and accurately.
- We provide services to obstetrical patients of all stages of pregnancy including postpartum as well as patients who present with a primary gynecologic condition.
- The WHEC provides point-of-care services, including OB and GYN ultrasound, to offer expert care in a timely, efficient manner.

Our team cooperates with hospitals on the establishment of quality performance metrics and the implementation of action plans to continuously improve clinical processes. We are available to assist in ensuring the competence of nurses to meet Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) requirements. We can also collaborate with partner hospitals to implement evidence-based practices and enhance the hospital team’s expertise through simulation drills and didactic trainings to complement their continuing education. We have many years of experience as a team in obtaining Level of Care certifications. We can help you obtain the level of certification that meets your strategic goals.
