Keeping OBGYNs in Their Practice During the Day and Their Beds at Night

When choosing to specialize in OBGYN, a physician decides to dedicate his or her practice to serving the needs of women and their families. As a result, these doctors often sacrifice precious time with their own spouses and children when on call for emergency procedures and deliveries. Helping OBGYNs restore and maintain a healthy work/life balance is important to Southern Arizona Laborists.

Our board-certified OBGYNs are onsite and ready to engage when community providers cannot immediately respond to patients, alleviating stress on both doctors and expectant moms. As a “partner on call,” Southern Arizona Laborists receive referrals from community physicians and midwives dedicated to ensuring a continuum of high-quality care for their pregnant patients in the event of their unavailability.

The specialists on our team become an extension of the community physician, responding to a patient’s immediate needs in collaboration with her community doctor. Women treated under this model receive “the best of both worlds”: the security of knowing a board-certified OBGYN is addressing their emergent needs the comfort of knowing their private doctor is involved in their care, too.

A Visionary Approach to OBGYN Care

We believe that all women presenting with an obstetric or gynecologic concern deserve to receive their care from a specialist. We are working to expand our innovative model of care, the Women’s Health Emergency Center (WHEC). Our hope is that the WHEC will eventually be available in every community across the country to improve the quality of emergency care delivered to women. Each member of our team of board-certified OBGYNs believes in providing exceptional care to patients and improving outcomes. Our goal is that patients are seen by a board certified OBGYN, that they are properly assessed with bedside diagnostic testing and specific laboratory testing to aid in a prompt and accurate diagnosis. We believe this is the future of OBGYN care.

Meet Dr. Christinne D. Canela

I like the ability to provide continuity of care. In a traditional hospital setting there are a lot of heartaches and trauma that are created by the long waits women often experience treatment before receiving treatment. Working in the WHEC, I get to know patients and develop a relationship with them. Patients are very happy coming to us rather than a traditional emergency room where they are not priority case. With us, patients are fast-tracked, their ultrasounds are interpreted bedside and they have ready access to a physician. I’m thankful I made the switch to Southern Arizona Laborists. There is a great work/life balance.  I have two young children and I can volunteer in their school. I have flexibility to manage my schedule and I still see a lot of interesting cases which keeps the work challenging.

“During our weekly team huddles, cases are reviewed, and we teach each other how to become even better. There aren’t a lot of practices that still do that. We are always thinking about patient safety.”
